Kazi Nazrul Islam is the national poet of Bangladesh. He is well known as the Rebel poet in Bengali literature. He was born at Churulia in Asansol in 25 May in 1899. His father's name was Kazi Fakir Ahmed and his mother's name was Zaheda Khatun. He had struggled hard against poverty. He was admitted to a local primary school. But he did not obey the hard and fast rule of the school. At twelve he fled away from home and took a job of a baker boy and for that he got taka 5 per month. He learned of poetry, drama and literature while working with theatrical groups. He assailed the British Raj in India and preached revolution through his poetic works, such as "Bidrohi" and "Bhanger Gaan" as well as his publication "Dhumketu". Throughout his career, Nazrul wrote a number of short stories, novels, and essays. His songs are collectively known as Nazrul Sangeet. At the age of 43, he began suffering from an unknown disease, losing his voice and memory. Invited by the government of Bangladesh, Nazrul and his family moved to Dhaka in 1972, where he died in 1976.
