Sustainable Development

Along with meeting the needs of the present generation through development activities, those development activities do not become a cause of deficiency or hindrance in meeting the needs of future generations. Sustainable development is not only about environmental conservation and economic development; Rather, social and human development is also under its purview. In 1987, the UN Brundtland Commission's 'Our Common Future' report first defined the concept of sustainable development. The United Nations adopted a 15-year period of sustainable development goals from 2000-2015, known as the Millennium Development Goals or MDGs. Following this, in 2015, the United Nations adopted the 15-year Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), whose main and sole objective is to ensure peace and prosperity in the world. The organization set 17 significant and timely targets to implement that goal. However, there are 169 specific targets for the implementation of the SDGs. According to the 2022 report published by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) on SDG implementation, Bangladesh ranks 104th out of 163 countries – a score of 64.22. On the other hand, Finland is the top country in the world in SDG implementation with a score of 86.51.
